The Best Ways to Utilize Bloom’s Taxonomy

Benjamin Bloom an American educational psychologist laid down a concept with the intention of providing skills to the students rather than the content. This concept is being widely used in the foreign countries and has effectively changed the quality of education provided to the students. The aim shifts from teacher-oriented classroom to student-oriented classroom.

Bloom’s Taxonomy is a classification on the basis of three domains for teaching and learning purposes. The three domains are: Cognitive domain (mental skills), affective domain (emotions and feelings) and psycho-motor domain (physical skills).

This blog focusses on the Cognitive domain. It allows the faculties to mould the syllabus based on the students’ needs or abilities. This would help the students to grasp and reproduce the knowledge.

The six levels identified are:



  1. Remembering:

Deals with exhibiting the quality of recollecting the facts, terms or basic concepts that have already been shared or taught. For helping the students remember the faculties can use the following methods like:

  • MCQs
  • Recollect facts or statistics
  • Everyday revisions


  1. Understanding:

This step deals with interpretation of knowledge that the student remembers. The knowledge can be construed differently by every individual. For helping the students remember the faculties can use the following methods like:

  • Give a current scenario or statement and ask the explanation.
  • Create examples or metaphors.


  1. Applying:

Application deals with applying the acquired knowledge in situations as and when also can be used for communication and relationship purposes. For helping the students remember the faculties can use the following methods like:

  • Giving team projects.
  • Assessing through tests.


  1. Analysing:

Analysis is the step in which the information is broken down and processed. Identifying motives and causes or unprompted use of abstraction. Performing SWOT analysis is one such example.


  1. Evaluating:

This step deals with making judgements about the value of ideas or materials. The students would be urged to profess new predictions or theories based on the given facts. Evaluating critical thinking, strategic outputs etc.


  1. Creating:

Creating deals with the production of a prototype either on paper or digitally. This helps the students to use the information gathered to be organized in a different way. The knowledge learnt here are applied in real life.


The taxonomy can be easily inculcated in the Indian education system. Education is evolving and this would help in focussing on the students and the tips above could be used as guidelines. The focus should be on how the curriculum could be taught in a way that the students are able to remember and reproduce.

Women Ahoy !


Women today are playing multiple roles and playing them efficiently. They are experts at striking a balance between work and home. Even though most of them are not given as much authority and responsibility as they deserve to get in an organization, especially after marriage, some women have managed to stand out and prove that women are superheroes in their own aspect.

It’s the time where women are standing up for themselves and standing for what is right; gender equality.

In such a scenario, all those years and money that she has put into her education seem to feel like a waste of time because it’s not put into use anymore. This feeling is very common among women in their late 30’s, because they feel that they are far more qualified than being a home maker.

Less Faculty, more benightedness

When we talk about education, it’s not only the compulsory education that kids around the country need to have, but also competent education that shapes the future of our country. The national convenor of the RTE (Right to education) forum, Ambarish Rai, said that “we are facing a shortage of five lakh teachers” on March 25,2015, as quoted by IANS, New Delhi.

The major challenges faced by the Institutes today are:

  1. Acute shortage of competent faculties
  2. Lack of conceptual clarity in students
  3. Not meeting industry standards
  4. Affects placements and industry interaction
  5. Impacts quality of admission
  6. Dilutes Institute’s brand

These problems are a vicious cycle and the source of it all is the ability to reach out to competent faculties continuously over a period of time.

This results in dilution of quality.

In the same article of IANS, Rai said, “An additional 6.6 lakh teachers need teacher-training. Most teachers are able to teach the concepts, but, due to dearth of visiting faculty, practical application of these concepts is missed out.

Thus arises a need for teachers/mentors who can bridge this gap and give the students, their fundamental right to free and quality education.

Industry experts today seek to teaching as a hobby where they can impart their practical knowledge to students and give them a different perspective to look at things. For highly qualified professionals, teaching is a part time activity that they can indulge into and earn an extra few bucks for themselves. On an average, 5 hours of teaching in a post-graduation Institute during the weekend would aid an earnings of INR 60,000-80,000.

The question here is, even though it’s a great incentive for Faculties to take up teaching, why are not many are opting to do so? The reasons for the same can be not being aware of such opportunities.

The issue of shortage of Faculty, therefore, is one alarming call to all such industry doyens who can help in shaping the future of this country and bridge the gap that exists in the education sector today; the gap between classroom education and practical application.
